Halloween or hallowe’en is the annually tradition on 31st October, especially celebrated in America, and it is usually done at night. Halloween is celebrated by children and adults. Most children like to celebrate Halloween, wearing creepy or spooky costume and walking around to their neighbor, asking candies and chocolate while yelling “trick or treat”, it means to give them candies or ‘picked on’. Being mischievous is still done only for the stingy persons, they will trim the tree in front of their house with toilet tissue or jot down their windows with foam. While for adults, it is the chance for them to wear the unique costumes and scary masks and have fun with their friends.
History
Actually Halloween came from Ireland, it was called the festival of Samhain (the ancient language of irish) which was celebrated by kelt man a long time ago. Samhain festival was the celebration of harvest in the culture of Gael people, was called “kelt new year”. In this festival the people slaughtered the cattle and supply the food to prepare the winter. Gael people believed that 31st October was the border of the dead and alive people that could open ‘the gate’. They believed the dead endangered human being by carrying the diseases and wrecked the harvest.
The Jargon of Halloween derived from All Hallows’ Even (eve and even means afternoon or night). Night before all hollow, was called All Saints Holy Day, it was the sacred festival, was called the day of the dead, which celebrated the souls of their family and relatives, coming back to earth.
Halloween was brought by the Irish who immigrated to North America and introduced this culture of Irish to American, and now is very popular in America.
Halloween Symbol
The symbol of Halloween is pumpkin which is carved to shape “the scary face” with the light inside, coming from the candle, is called Jack-O-lantern. It is usually put in the front door after the day gets dark. The symbols of Halloween describes the circumstances of autumn, including the harvest of pumpkins. They also describes the symbol of death, miracle, monster and the creatures, such as alien, witch, bat, zombie, mummy and more. The people used to wear black and orange only, however now, they wear purple, green and red. The people usually decorate their house and the shopping center with the symbols of Halloween since it is the most popular celebration in America after Christmas.
The celebration of Halloween in U.S
In 2005, American candy manufacturer association reports that 80% of adults were planning to give the candies to the children who were coming to their house, whereas 93% of children were willing to come to their neighbor in the night of Halloween.
Anoka, one of the state of Minnesota claimed as ‘the capital city of Halloween’ and the people hold a very big parade there.
In Salem, Massachusetts, known as witch city, is usually visited by tourists nearly the Halloween festival to see the parade of Halloween.
While in New York, the people hold the biggest parade in U.S, called ‘the village Halloween parade’, which attracts 50 thousand of costumed people and 4 millions audiences on television.

Saint Valentine’s day is very popular in Indonesia. As we know, Saint Valentine’s day is calebrated by Western. On 14 February we celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day, usually by the way of exchanging cards, sweets, lingerie, flowers or jewelry. In Indonesia, the manufacturer of chocolate get a lot of orders. On average, the costumer are among teenagers who are dominated by high school students and college students.
According to Ted Olsen (2000) history about
Saint Valentine’s day was a priest who secretly performed marriages when Emperor Claudius II reportedly forbade marriage (in an effort to ensure he had soldiers without family ties). Another story says that he was a Christian imprisoned for his faith, and cured his jailer's daughter of blindness. The day before his execution (supposedly Feb. 14, 269), he sent a farewell message to the daughter signed "From your Valentine."
No one is even sure if 14 February was the day of his birth or his death or if it had indeed anything to do with Saint Valentine at all. The only thing that is for sure, is that the Romans had a tradition in the middle of February, which would mark the 14th, called the Love Lottery. It was believed that spring and with it the renewal of life came along in the middle of February, therefore the love lottery was held, coupling young men and women for one year, often leading to marriage (Birgit and Roger Pratcher, 2006).
Valentine's Day - a day that represents love and romance- is celebrated on February 14th in most English speaking countries around the world. In modern times Valentine's Day is largely considered a "Hallmark Holiday," due to the robust amount of commercialism associated with the day. But St. Valentine's Day does have religious origins at its roots (Amber Cleave, 2010).
In Great Britain it was around the 17th century that Valentine’s Day became a celebrated Holiday. By the middle of the 18th century it was common for all social classes to exchange small gifts or handwritten notes with lovers, loved ones and friends. By the end of the 18th century printed Valentine’s cards were available.
In the United States people started celebrating Valentine’s Day in the early 1700’s by exchanging Valentine’s notes.
The Greeting Card Association announced that Valentine’s Day is the second best selling card-sending day with one billion cards sold per year. The leader in the card industry is with 2.6 billion, Christmas.
In the year 1835 Pope Gregory XVI was so impressed by the Irish Priest Father John Spratt that he gave him the black and golden casket, which is believed to house the remains of Saint Valentine. This gift from Rome, the black and golden casket, can actually be viewed on Valentine’s Day every year at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin, Ireland (Birgit and Roger Pratcher, 2006).
As closing in this article, I hope the reader can get information what Saint Valentine’s day is about. There are a lot of ways to say “LOVE”. On 14 February, we celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day, usually by the way of exchanging cards, sweets, lingerie, flowers or jewelry. Even in Indonesia, we can say it by using chocolate. What do you like to say it? It is your choice, but you have to remember that every day you should become Saint Valentine’s day with your family.

Valentine's Day is celebrated on every 14th of February. It is a day where a pair of couples who are in love saying his love for her partner. Usually they always say “happy valentine” in the card. In the western world, this tradition is done by exchanging Valentine's cards to the partner. Over the development period beside a greeting card are given, each partner can provide: flowers, chocolates, candy, diamond or any prizes. According to the results in depth, approximately 85% of women who dominate in the provision of a greeting card to his partner. It makes Valentine's Day became the second biggest day after Christmas. Actually, Valentine's Day romance is not just for lovers but for everyone, for example: between friends or family, we also can express our love to them.
Valentine's Day in America became the biggest day of romance, but that does not mean just on Valentine's Day we can express love to others. Every day if necessary, we must express our love to those we love. There is a growing thought in Indonesia that if we celebrate Valentine's Day means we celebrate the death of Saint Valentine. In principle, the appearance of Valentine’s Day is related with Saint Valentine (a martyr or a saint in the Catholic doctrine) has ever secretly marrying Roman soldiers. The historical is when Roman Emperor Claudius II built the military at that time and thought single men would be a good soldier. To build a strong army, the emperor forbade young men to marry. Prohibition of affection is not fair, then St. Valentine perform marriage ceremonies secret. When caught, the legendary love priest sentenced to death. Tragically, the priest was beheaded in public for refusing to denounce the name of Christ. That's why the church set February 14th as a day to honor the life of Saint Valentine who had fought for love. He regarded as people who care about love, so his death was become as a valentine’s day. so do not be too concerned about this historical, if you want to celebrate Valentine's day with you partner on that date, it's up to you. If you do not want to celebrate it, it's up to you too guys because there is no obligation to celebrate Valentine's Day on 14 February. We can show and express our love to others all the time.
Valentine's Day is symbolized by the heart symbol and something pink. A few days before Valentine's Day can we find the stores or places of recreation and malls that decorate the place they were filled with the pink color. Especially for chocolate and flower shops, close to the 14th of February they will be flooded with orders from each pair of lovers who are dominated by young people, because teenagers are very enthusiastic about Valentine's Day to give a bar of chocolate and a flower to their partner. Don’t judge the Valentine’s Day. You can do anything that you want as long as it does not interfere with other people.

Saint Valentine’s Day
Saint Valentine's Day, commonly shortened to Valentine's Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14th.. Saint Valentine's Day is the day people in Europe and America express their love for each other through buying flowers, candy, chocolates, cards, or even poems for those they love.
Valentine's day is a jumble of traditions, beliefs, and celebrations that has come to us from a distant past. There are several versions of Valentine’s legends. For the first legend, It is celebrated on February 14th because it was upon this day that Saint Valentine (Christian martyrs) was supposed to have been executed for performing marriages. The story goes back the 2nd Century A.D. when Christians were persecuted by the Roman government. Christian marriages and other ceremonies were absolutely forbidden. The legend has it that Claudius II was trying to raise an army in Rome. It was his belief that married men would not make good soldiers because they would always be worried about their wives and children back home. To raise men for the army he forbid young men to marry. The punishment for any priest who would perform a marriage ceremony would be death. Because he so fervently believed in love and the idea that marriage was a holy state, St. Valentine performed marriage ceremonies. Then you could imagine that he was beheaded by the Government’s Executioner.
Another version, St. Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was very impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, he persuaded to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.
However. Those legends tried to show that St. ‘a hero of love’ Valentine was real. But there were no evidences that proved the legends were true. Meanwhile, I tend to believe that Valentine’s Day just a replacement by Pope Gelasius I (because he didn’t like paganism) for the pagan Roman holiday of the Lupercalia, was an archaic rite connected to fertility and celebrated on February 13-15th.
The earliest Valentine in existance today is from 1415, a poem ‘Parlement of Foules’ written by Geoffrey Chaucer to his wife, which is part of the collection of the British library in London. In both England and America, people seem to have begun exchanging handmade valentines in the 1700's, and premade cards were available by the mid-1800's. The Greeting Card Association claims that a billion cards are sent out for valentine's today, and 85% of those cards are purchased by women.
Nowadays, Valentine's Day is observed as a special day for love and romance and celebrated by many people in many countries. Traditionally celebrated by lovers, it can also be celebrated with family, friends, and even with co-workers. An interesting part of Valentine's Day in USA is the celebrations organized by kids. Several schools organize Valentine's Day programmes where children perform songs, dance, skits and plays. Children also gift handmade gifts and cards to their friends and teachers. In Wales, UK, a unique and beautiful custom on Valentine’s Day was to gift wooden spoons with custom design carved on them, such as hearts, keyholes and keys. The keys and keyholes were meant to represent the phrase “You unlock my heart!”. All of those traditions showed ‘the power of love’ in Valentine’s day.

What is Halloween?
The word "Halloween" is derived from Eve of All Hallows (All Hallows Eve) or Hallow even which means the evening before All Saints' Day. "Hallow" is an Old English word for "saint". This was shortened to Hallowe’en and finally to Halloween. Celebrated on the night of October 31, is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today. Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity and life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts, telling ghost stories and attending parties.
It was believed that after you died, your soul remained in limbo (some place afterlife). To send the souls up to Heaven the Christians used to go "souling". On 31st October, All Souls Day, they would go around to all the villages and collect "soul cakes" a cake made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The relatives of the dead would pass the cakes on to the Christians who would promise to pray for their relative which in turn would send them on to heaven. The more cakes given - the more prayers said. This is one custom which was thought that trick-or-treating originated from.
It is also thought that trick-or-treating came from Britain ,it is particularly popular in parts of Northern England it could also of come from old Irish peasant practice in which they would go from door to door to collect money, bread cake, cheese, eggs, butter, nuts, apples, etc. So many symbols of Halloween such bats, black cat, jack o lantern, owl, skeleton, spider, witch...
The use of Jack-O-Lanterns as festival lights for Halloween is a custom that descended form the Irish who used carved out turnips or beets as lanterns. On Halloween these lights represented the souls of the dead. When the Irish immigrated to America they found that pumpkins were far more easier to come by than turnips. The Jack-O-Lantern then became a hollowed-out pumpkin lit with a candle. In general the whole custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by the Irish immigrants who were fleeing the country's potato famine.
The evil side of Halloween was pushed forward mainly by the church. The church maintained that the gods and goddesses and other spiritual beings of traditional religions were diabolical deceptions and manifestations of the devil. Therefore the customs associated with Halloween were always represented by the church as being evil - ghosts, human skeletons, symbols of the dead, Satan and other creatures such as witches.

Halloween is tradition of celebration the night of 31 October. At the first I didn’t understand, why the night on 31st October that commemorated by the American? Then after I read the history of Halloween, the American believes that on 31 October, the barrier between the worlds of dead with the living into the open.
One of the unique traditions in America to welcome Halloween is Trick or Treat. Children will walk from house to house with a unique costume while carrying a basket, and knocked on the door yelling "Trick or treaaaat".
Actually this is a threat, because its original meaning is, if you do not give "treats" aka food; we will do the "trick" or the naughtiness of the house earlier. Homeowners will be out and reward a variety of sweet foods such as chocolate or candy in their baskets.
Halloween is celebrated by American children with a ghost or witch costumes, they went to the neighbor’s homes by knock and yelling “trick or treat” to get the candy. American teenagers celebrate Halloween by holding a costume party.
I think the celebration of Halloween is very unique because the American use carved pumpkins creepy form in which given a candle burning for more frightening suggest.

HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL
Halloween is the first time known as the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain. Samhain was the New Year’s Day of the pagan Celt. It was also the Day of the Dead. Many traditional beliefs and customs associated with Samhain continue to be practiced today on the 31st of October. Halloween in Ireland is called Hallow E’en, means All Hallows Eve, or the night before the “All Hallows’, also called ‘All Hallowmas’, or ‘All Saints’, or ‘All Souls’ Day. In old English, the word ‘Hallow’ meant ‘sanctify’. Briefly, in Oxford Pocket Dictionary, Halloween is 31 October, when children dress up as ghosts and witches. Until recent times in some parts of Europe, it was believed that on this night the dead amongst them, and that witches flew in their midst.
The traditional beliefs and customs are the practice of leaving offerings of food and drink (now candy) to masked and costumed revelers, and the light of bonfires. Elements of this festival were incorporated into the Christian festival of All Hallow’s Eve, or Hallow-Even, the night preceding All Saint’s (Hallows’) Day.
There are a lot of traditions in Halloween festival, such as symbols and imagery, costumes, games, haunted attractions, and foods. Halloween imagery includes themes of death, evil, and the occult or mythical monsters. Black and orange are the holiday’s traditional colors. The imagery of Halloween is derived from many sources, including national customs, works of gothic and horror literature, and classic horror film. The turnip (round white, or white and purple, root vegetable) has traditionally been used in Ireland and Scotland at Halloween. Immigrants to North America used the native pumpkin, which are both readily available and much larger so that it makes them easy to make carve on it.
Costuming become popular for Halloween parties in the US in the early 20th century, as often for adults as for children. Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as monsters, ghosts, skeleton, witches, and devils. Over time, the costume selection extended to include popular characters form fiction, celebrities, and generic archetypes such as ninjas and princesses.
Beside imaginary and costumes, there are several traditional games associated with Halloween parties. One common game is dunking or apple bobbing. The apples float in a tub or a large basin of water and the participants must use their teeth to remove an apple from the basin. Some games traditionally played at Halloween are forms of divination, the skill or act of saying what will happen in the future. Another game/ superstition that was enjoyed in the early 1990’s involved walnut shells. The telling of ghost stories and viewing of horror films is common fixture of Halloween parties. Folks would also play fortune teller. In order to play this game, symbols were cut out of paper and placed on a platter. Someone would enter a dark room and was ordered to put her hand on a piece of ice then lay it on a platter. Her "fortune" would stick to the hand.
From the above story about Halloween festival, I can sumarize that Halloween is an ancient or traditional beliefs and custom in Europe. Even recent times in some parts of Europe, people still believe that the dead amongst them on this night flew in their midst. This is what we call culture and belief of other countries. It is like in Indonesia that traditional people still believe in superstition. We can not ignore the existence of this, and sometimes we are insisted to know about others’ beliefs to strengthen our culture. But as Muslims, we can not imitate and follow the custom of non-Muslim. Moreover if one decides to go along with the outward practises of Halloween without acknowledging the deeper significance or historical background of this custom of pagan festival. So, it’s useful to know others’ belief and custom before we follow and blind imitate of them.

Halloween is kind of event that is celebrated in some countries, one of country that celebrates Halloween is England or United Kingdom. Halloween in United Kingdom had been started since 2000 years ago BC. It is held on 31st October. A long time ago “Halloween” was celebrated in the summer in the gathering of harvest with the festival called “Samhain”. On that date the ancient people believed that our world and other were connected. On that day, the spirit of the death will cross over to communicate with the living. The very big bonfire has its important role to welcome the good souls and to keep away the bad. They believe that the spirits have role in their harvest. They made some sacrifice with burn something, dressed up like animals, and lit the bonfire so they can make a ceremony for the spirits.
Now Halloween is celebrated in some countries. It became annually event. At the present, Halloween is celebrated not for the harvest, I think it just for keeping the tradition moving on. I have heard that each country has its own way to celebrate the Halloween. Most of them are the same. The topic that surrounds it is ghost or souls of deaths. That’s why people will use costume like ghosts, animals, or may it be depends on the theme that they make at that time. On Halloween day, people believe that the good spirit will come and the bad will go out.
It is said that why people use costumes like ghosts or animal is for ward off the bad spirits. In England Halloween is very popular event. Some schools usually have parties to celebrate Halloween. If you can dress in a costume or mask as creative as you can, you might be the winner for the most creative costume. The students usually dress in witches, ghosts, or animal figure that associate with Halloween. More over there are some fictitious character from horror movies or film, and from books. Well, actually they are not only celebrate the Halloween but also learn about the origin’s and history.
For the children usually go to door to door with the adults and say “trick or treat”. They knock at the door, and if the host opens their doors, they will say it. The hosts usually give candies for the treats, that’s why they always bring bags or plastic buckets, but if they don’t give it, the children will make some trick to the host or just little joke. The children only go around their neighborhood. For the family, they are used to have their own occasion such as sit on the ground around the bonfire at the backyard, roasting nuts or eating apples, playing or telling horror stories. It’s fun and enjoying.
Usually there are some symbols that associated with the Halloween. For example, pumpkin lanterns, witches, wizard, ghosts, spirits, and the figure of movies characters, and the animals that so related to the Halloween are bats, black cats, and spiders. It is believed that the black cat brings a good luck and the black brings a bad luck. Pumpkin lantern or jack-o-lantern is a pumpkin that symbolize the bad soul of jack who wasn’t accepted in heaven because he was a tempered man and miserly, neither in hell since he tricked the devil.
There are so many movies that show us about Halloween and most of them is horror movie. It is very different if we compare with the background of the history of Halloween. This is not for the harvest time but for the continuing of the tradition for the rich of culture. That’s the way people give honor to their history, and to respect the death.
To my opinion is “I think each country or continent has its own way to keep the tradition, Halloween is one of the way to respect and remember the death.
These are the symbols of Halloween :
1. jack-o-lantern
2. black cat
3. witch
4. spider
5. ghost

the history of valentine's day is impossible to be obtained from any archive and the veil of centuries gone by has made the origin behind this day more difficult to trace It is only some legends that are our source for the history of Valentine's Day. The modern St. Valentine's Day celebrations are said to have been derived from both ancient Christian and Roman tradition. As per one legend, the holiday has originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalis/Lupercalia, a fertility celebration that used to observed annually on February 15.According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by the name of Valentine. While one was a priest in Rome, another was a bishop in Terni.Nothing is known about the third St. Valentine except that he met his end in Africa. The story of St. Valentine has two different versions - the Protestant and the Catholic one. Both versions agree upon Saint Valentine being a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies of soldiers in opposition to Claudius II who had prohibited marriage for young men and was executed by the latter.Education declined, taxation increased and trade witnessed a very bad time. When Claudius became the emperor, he felt that married men were more emotionally attached to their families, and thus, will not make good soldiers. He believed that marriage made the men weak. Thus 14th February became a day for all lovers and Valentine became its Patron Saint. It began to be annually observed by young Romans who offered handwritten greetings of affection, known as Valentines, on this day to the women they admired. With the coming of Christianity, the day came to be known as St. Valentine's Day.By the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging hand-made cards on Valentine's Day had become common in England. Hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts began to be created on this day and handed over to the man or woman one loved.Today, Valentine's Day is one of the major holidays in the U.S. and has become a booming commercial success. According to the Greeting Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are "valentine"s. The "valentines", as Valentine's Day cards are better known as, are often designed with hearts to symbolize love. The Valentine's Day card spread with Christianity, and is now celebrated all over the world.

Before I talk about Valentine’s celebration I would like to talk about the history of Valentine’s Day.
The name of Valentine’s Day is taken from the name of a pastor St. Valentine who lived in Rome in the third century. He lived in the kingdom who was led by Emperor Claudius who was cruel. Claudius wanted all the men in his kingdom became military forces and involved in a war. People denied his rule, because they didn’t want to leave his family or his girlfriend. The Emperor was angry and then he made a rule for his people that nobody was allowed to get married. The Emperor thought that if they didn’t get married they would join military sincerely. The young couples couldn’t accept that rule. They still performed the marriages and didn’t obey the Emperor’s rule. St. Valentine still was on duty as a pastor to marry a young people secretly. One night, he married a couple, that action was known by the Emperor. The couple successful to run away, unfortunately St. Valentine was caught. He was in prison and sentenced to death with decapitated. Many people even the turnkey’s daughter supported his action. In that day St. Valentine wrote a letter with love to the turnkey’s daughter. That letter changed everything, and people in the world celebrated in that day to remain his struggle, recall him as a cupid and defined that day as a day full of love, Valentine’s Day.
In this case, I would like to talk about the celebration of Valentine’s Day in the America and UK.
In America, people celebrate the Valentine’s Day with exchanging the cards. There are so many kinds of cards. Not only beautiful cards which content words of love, but also contain of the cruel humor. People sometimes made a unique card with their own hand to give someone they love. Nowadays in a revolution of Valentine’s Day, most of the young Americans celebrate Valentine’s Day isn’t a day full of love, but they celebrate as a “Holy Day”. The youngsters decide that Valentine’s Day isn’t celebrated for people but for God only. They stated that the most romantic thing to celebrate Valentine’s Day is celebrate the love of God and make the Valentine’s Day as a Holy Day. They swear to God to keep her/him virginity until their marriage. All Americans youngsters wear a white trendy bracelet which reads “Live Purity” and a white T-shirt which reads “Purity”, and they aren’t using a pink color as a symbol anymore, but also using white color as a symbol.
In UK, to celebrate the Valentine’s Day, single women must get up early morning and a first man who they see will be her soul mate. Another unique Habit is they put four clove leaves in the corner of their pillow as a symbol of lucky and they eat an egg and salt in the night of Valentine’s Day. Other celebration are little girl dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day. They went from house to house while singing. In Wales, young men will give wooden spoon to his girlfriend. Heart shape and the key is the most favorite for the carved decoration on the wooden spoon. The girl will accept a blouse from her girlfriend; it is a symbol that she will get married. There is a love seat is a wide chair, later love seat is made to seat two people, in this way a couple can sit side by side.
That’s all is the way to celebrate the Valentine’s Day. People celebrate the Valentine’s Day in many different ways to make a beautiful moment, the most romantic moment, and the unforgettable moment, with someone they love in their life. They will make just like the most beautiful and the most romantic love story in the Valentine’s Day, just like the love story of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the sweetest ever.

HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL
As we know, millions of children across North America always celebrate an annual holiday that observed on the evening of October 31st every year. They do many activities such as paint their faces, trick-or-treating, dress up in costumes, carving jack-o'-lanterns, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. It is not only for the children but also for the adults too. They also decorate their houses with something scary like ghostly figures, carve scary faces on pumpkins, and they also put candles in them. It is to create “Jack-O-Lanterns”. The celebration is usually called Halloween (or Hallowe’en).
At the beginning, Halloween is known as the ancient Celtic (Irish/Scottish/Welsh) festival called Samhain, whose original spelling was Samuin (pronounced saw-an or sow-in). It was the day of the dead, people believed that it was a time when the souls of those who had died during the year were allowed access into the “land of the dead”. These customs have the most notable; there are the practice of leaving offerings of food and drink (now candy) to masked and costumed revelers, and the lighting of bonfires. The elements of this festival were incorporated into the Christian festival of All Hallow’s Eve, or Hallow-Even, the night preceding All Saint's (Hallows') Day.
In Halloween celebration, people make some carving of Jack-O-Lanterns. It is used as a symbol of Halloween. Jack-O-Lanterns are usually made from turnip. People will carve it into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory. The turnip has traditionally been used in Ireland and Scotland at Halloween, but the immigrants of North America used the native pumpkins. They use it because pumpkin is much larger than turnip, so they can easier to carve it to be a Jack-O-Lantern.
There are so many activities in Halloween festival. One of them is trick-or-treating and guising. This activity is usually celebrated for children on Halloween. Children go from house to house. B. The History of Valentine’s Day
The history of Valentine's Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who may have been his jailor's daughter who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.
While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial which probably occurred around 270 A.D others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "christianize" celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors.
In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology.
